Shift Lever Extension

The shift lever on the actual transmission was extended (1 7/8") to match it's throw to the travel of the actuation solenoid (approximately 2 inches  : shift up + shift down).  This also amplified the strength of the solenoid to produce a smooth and complete shift.

The oval headed cap screw is the location of the original shift linkage attachment point.

Shift Lever Extender

The extender was made from .020" steel plate.  The lower 5/16" hole (right in view) is used to bolt the extender to the existing shift lever.  The shoulders on the extender keep it from pivoting once attached and eliminates the need to drill any additional holes in the existing shift lever.  The shoulder seperation should be tight to your shift lever.  Rick's lever (1990 FXR) was .630".   The upper 5/16" hole (left in view) is for the shift linkage from the solenoid.  The distance between the 5/16" holes is 1 7/8".  All other dimensions are non-critical

Needless to say -  to be Harley - this piece must be CHROMED

Mounting The Shifter Solenoid

The Shift Solenoid mounts into the V of the mounting bracket angle iron with a SS hose clamp.  The length of the shift linkage is designed to move the solenoid as far forward as possible (to minimize the effect of the yaw produced by the arc of the shift lever).  Alignment between the solenoid shaft and the shift lever was addressed by placing a kink in the linkage.

Final Adjustment

Fine tuning of the solenoid position to center its throw to the required travel of the shift lever to produce a full and clean shift Up and Down is accomplished by simply sliding the solenoid fore and aft.

Window Dressing

No Harley add-on is complete without some chrome so - A short Chrome Muffler Heat shield was added to dress up the final product.  The clamp of the heat shield serves as a second mounting clamp.
